Here's how the Siri of iOS 9 will push ahead of Google Now and Cortana
For years, Apple's Siri digital assistant has skulked in the corner of iOS, usually assisting only when asked. Like the wallflower who gets a summer makeover, however, the new Siri that steps out with iOS 9 this fall will be outgoing and eager, bounding forward to help. Siri's upgrade (revealed at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday) emphasizes proactivity and has achieved parity with the primary features of Google Now and Microsoft's Cortana: time- and location-based reminders, hunting down videos that can be played within an app, identifying contacts via their phone number, or launching particular songs. But several of Siri's promised features actually push the platform ahead of the competition: pulling useful data from your apps, controlling your smart home, and kicking off specialized tasks based on your habits or current needs. Now that the power balance is shifting, here's how Siri stacks up to her competition.

Apple Is Opening Up Its Technology at Just the Right Time
"I think you will see us open up more in the future," Apple CEO Tim Cook said the AllThingsD D11 conference in 2013. Now, roughly three years later, we have the clearest picture yet of what a more open Apple looks like. During its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 13, Apple announced a slew of changes to some of its apps and services that allow them to work with third parties. Siri, iMessage, Apple Maps, and the Phone app are among the Apple services that developers will be able to tap into. This means iPhone owners will be able to do things like call an Uber through Siri, order food without leaving the Messages app, and make reservations in Apple Maps.
Apple's WWDC laundry list leaves us high and dry
One of the "big" announcements at WWDC: OS X will be renamed macOS. The late co-founder was famously obsessed with simplicity. Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on Monday was anything but, offering a dizzying list of features. "The mother of all releases," Apple CEO Tim Cook boasted about the "gigantic" nature of iOS 10, the latest version of its software that powers iPhones and iPads. But there's something to be said about the less is more approach, with few standout announcements emerging from the two-hour presentation.

Has Apple boosted iPhone security to keep out the FBI? New rules force users to use their passcode more often even if they've set up Touch ID fingerprint recognition
In the past few weeks, you may have noticed a mysterious message popping up on your iPhone after hours of non-use. A seemingly new prompt requires users to enter a passcode to access their phone, even though they have Touch ID enabled – but only if it hasn't been unlocked using its passcode in six days, and the Touch ID hasn't been used within the last eight hours. Though Apple has said the feature was added with the release of iOS 9, users have just now begun to see it, causing many to speculate about its connection to the firm's recent tensions with the FBI. A seemingly new prompt requires users to enter a passcode to access their phone, even though they have Touch ID enabled – but only if it hasn't been unlocked using its passcode in six days, and the Touch ID hasn't been used within the last eight hours According to the iOS Security Guide published earlier this month, there are a number of situations in which you may have to use your passcode to unlock your iPhone or iPad even if Touch ID is enabled. According to Macworld, the message reads'The passcode has not been used to unlock the device in the last six days and Touch ID has not unlocked the device in the last eight hours.'

Apple fixes the Siri and 3D Touch bug that put your photos and contacts at risk
A security expert caused a mild panic among iPhone users this week when he discovered a way to bypass the lockscreen with a simple Siri search. In a video, the bug seemingly let him unlock his iPhone 6S by searching for a contact on Twitter and then adding that contact to his address book. After Apple was made aware of the flaw, the firm has now confirmed the problem has been fixed and handsets should no longer be affected.
